The Gujarat
high court on Monday directed the state government to appoint the third
information commissioner within two months. This was in connection with a plea
filed by a Vadodara-based civil rights activist. The activist was seeking
directions to fill five vacant posts of information commissioners in the state
information commission.
A division
bench of chief justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice Vipul Pancholi delivered the
order. The state government had last week appointed former additional chief
secretary Haribhai Patel and former education secretary R R Varsani as
information commissioners.
Additional
advocate general Prakash Jani submitted to the division bench that the state
government had made the two appointments in consultation with chief minister
Anandiben Patel and the leader of opposition in the state assembly ,
Shankarsinh Vaghela.
The
petitioner, Praful Desai, had pleaded with the court to direct the government
to appoint five additional information commissioners so that appeals under the
RTI Act could be dealt with expeditiously .
