Nagpur Today: Nagpur: Wednesday, March 02, 2016.
In an
astonishing revelation, a staggering 1197 unmarried mothers registered for
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) or induced abortion in the past four
years in city of Nagpur. Of the 1197 unmarried mothers, six died during the
procedure. Similarly, five new-born babies too died. This stunning information
was shared by the Health Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in a
reply to a RTI query put up by renowned RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar. According
to a State Government notification, registration of MTP Centres is done by NMC
since 5.12.2013.
Six unmarried
mothers died while undergoing MTP during the same period while five new-born
babies too died.
The RTI reply
did not specify how many unmarried mothers were under the age of 18 years
citing non-availability of information as the reason. The reply also did not
share various other information such as how many unmarried girls got registered
for marriage, how many child marriages took place in Nagpur etc.
The RTI activist
Abhay Kolarkar had also sought information regarding the number of sanctioned
posts and the number of posts lying vacant in Health Department. The NMC
furnished charts showing the number of sanctioned posts and the number of
vacant posts.
