MBMC chief fines unruly engineer

Free Press Journal: Mumbai: Sunday, February 21, 2016.
Officials are often penalised for denying time-bound information under the RTI Act. However, perhaps for the first time in the history of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), an employee has been slapped with a monetary fine for alleged disobedience in conducting his duties.
Under the relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, MBMC chief Achyut Hange slapped a monetary fine of Rs 1,000 on junior engineer Prashant Jankar for dereliction.
According to officials, Jankar has been accused of signing a report related to the waste management project, despite his transfer from the concerned health wing to his current posting with the public works department. Not satisfied with the clarification given by Jankar to the show cause notice, the civic chief not only imposed a monetary fine but also directed the administrative wing to take note of the indiscipline in his service book.
It should be noted that Prashant Jankar had been caught red handed on December 9, 2011, while accepting Rs 50,000 as bribe from a municipal contractor to process his pending bills. However, after facing suspension for almost two years Jankar was reinstated back to service in 2014.  Interestingly, a suspended MBMC ward officer had been caught red handed by the ACB last week while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a vada-pav vendor in Mira Road.
