Thane collector halts new civic building work at Mira Road which was inaugurated by Maharashtra CM

Times of India: New Delhi: Wednesday, 06 January 2016.
The Thane collector has stalled the construction work of a new civic building in Mira Road by a private developer after it emerged that the land belonged to the state. The foundation stone was laid by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in October.
The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) building on a plot near S K Stone, Mira Road was being constructed by Salasar Unique Group. A residential-cum-commercial complex was also to come up on the 18-acre plot. Fadnavis had laid the foundation stone of the civic building on October 24. The MBMC is ruled by the BJP-Shiv Sena.
An RTI by a Mira Road resident Shivaji Mali found that the land belonged to the state government. Mali alleged that civic officials may have connived with the developer to grab the land. The developer was to construct the civic building free of cost. Mali submitted the land documents to the Thane collector and the CM. The collector Ashwini Joshi has stalled the work and instituted an inquiry into the matter.
The current civic headquarters is in Bhayander (west). The civic administration was to move into the new building.
