`One RTI query can change system'

Times of India: Ahmedabad: Monday, December 28, 2015.
“Your one RTI question can change the system. Don't lose faith in the law,“ said central infor mation com missioner Professor Madabhus hi Sridhar Acharyulu on Sunday.
Prof Acharyulu was in the city to attend an annual public relations conference. He poUSE inted out that in many cases people do not ask proper questions in their RTI applications and hence, they do not get response JAA from the public inGUJA formation officers. A TIMES O “First file a reENDEA gular complaint to address your grievance with the department and then follow it up with an RTI application, demanding file notings along with a copy of the action taken report on your complaint. Things would fall in place,“ he said.
“The law has empowered common people who are fighting their daily battles with the district collectorate, civic bodies, civil supplies, revenue departments in small towns and districts of our country. I think that is what matters,“ he added.
He pointed out, `If the go vernment has been accusing commoners of misusing the RTI Act, I say it's the same the other way aro und. I have found inTI numerable ways in which public bodies in states and at the centre have found ways of discoura ging citizens from as king information. Is O that not misuse of AT the act?“ NDIA Prof Acharyulu UR said that in future more support would be required from RTI users across the country for maintaining functional and financial autonomy of information commissions in the state and at the Centre.
