Times of India: Mumbai: Saturday, December 26, 2015.
Narayan
Varma, a chartered accountant and RTI activist, passed away on Thursday night.
He was 85.
Varma was
closely associated with the Bombay Chartered Accountants' Society (BCAS), had
served as its president and continued to be actively involved till the end.
Passionate about issues relating to RTI, transparency, good governance and
police reforms, Varma served as a trustee of various bodies, including the
Public Concern for Governance Trust along with former police commissioner Julio
Ribeiro.
He was also a
member of the anti-corruption cell at IMC and involved with Dharma Bharathi
Mission.
"The BCAS
Foundation under Varma's leadership launched an RTI clinic around 10 years ago,
which provides free guidance to people," Raman Jokhakar, president, BCAS,
said. "This clinic helped make RTI a potent tool for claiming long-pending
income-tax refunds. He had this incredible zeal to make things happen, a 'no
matter what' attitude to life and started many new initiatives."
