Times
of India: Chennai: Tuesday, 04 August 2015.
In an RTI
reply to TOI, the Chennai traffic police said that less than 20% of hit-and-run
cases are ever bought to book. In 2012, 242 people were killed in hit-and-run
cases. But the police could book only 12 people.
The traffic
police's reply also revealed their lack of will and resources to nab those who
cause such accidents, reports Karthikeyan Hemalatha.
According to
the Union ministry of road transport and highways, Tamil Nadu recorded 4,632
hit-and-run cases, of which 1,680 were fatal, in 2013. This is the third
highest in the country, followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
