Versova residents take to Facebook to stop illegal hacking of trees

DNA: Mumbai: Wednesday, 27 May 2015.
After nearly two months of observation, Versova’s Neha Singh has decided to raise her voice against rampant cutting down of trees in her area.
Thirty-two-year-old Singh noticed that for over two months, several trees were being cut down in her area. Agitated, she took to Facebook to express her annoyance at the axing of trees.
To her surprise, several citizens started to report similar concerns observed in their areas, on her post. Singh said, “For nearly two months, I noticed that several trees were being axed in and around my area. Along with my friend, we went to click pictures of the trees which are either trimmed down or axed by the civic body workers and posted them all on Facebook.”
Singh along with her friend started an online petition to spread awareness among citizens and to prevent the tree cutting activities. Singh added, “We have started an online petition four days ago and till now it is signed by over 325 people. Every time somebody signs the petition, the mail directly goes to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner.”
Singh has further filed an RTI to seek information on the number of trees axed by the BMC and number of saplings planted by the civic body workers, in her area.
Dhruv Lohumi, 29, a resident of Versova, helped Singh in sharing the petition on social media. Lohumi explained, “As an active citizen, I thought we need to take the initiative to bring a change. The rampant cutting down of trees must be stopped.”
The duo has, so far, received over 100 images on their Facebook post, from across Mumbai, showing cut down trees.
