Raising
questions on Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Madan Mitra’s medical treatment at a
city’s government hospital, civil rights organisation People for Better
Treatment (PBT) said here on Thursday that State-run SSKM Hospital was yet to
respond to its RTI seeking information about Mr. Mitra’s medical details.
Arrested by
the Central Bureau of Investigation in December 2014, Mr. Mitra was admitted to
SSKM Hospital after he complained of ill health. Questioning why he was kept at
a premier cabin of the hospital depriving the common man of quality health
care, PBT president Kunal Saha alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was
shielding the Minister who is jailed for his alleged involvement in the
multi-crore Saradha scam.
“The RTI was
filed by us on April 10 and was received by the SSKM State public information
officer on April 16. As per the RTI Act, 2005, they were bound to reply within
30 days but have failed to do. We will file a second appeal,” Dr. Saha told
journalists via video conference.
Questioning
the seriousness of Mr. Mitra’s health conditions, Dr. Saha said Mr. Mitra was
kept in a luxurious air conditioned cabin at the hospital’s cardiology
department, far away from the harsh prison environment.
“Although
SSKM doctors found him as a critically ill patient who could not be kept under
police custody, no detailed medical report has been made available yet pertaining
to his health. Is the State government trying to shield unethical doctors who
issued false medical certificates to keep the arrested Minister out of jail?”
Dr. Saha wondered.
