The
metropolitan court has granted bail to two accused who were caught by the crime
branch for asking for Rs 50 lakh from a sanitary inspector of Ahmedabad Civil
Hospital. The duo who posed as RTI activist and journalist had demanded the
amount to withdraw the application filed under the Right to Information Act
with the health department in Gandhinagar.
The court
earlier rejected the remand application for the two and later released them on
conditional bail. According to the prosecution, the two Hitesh Patel who posed
as a RTI activist and Ajay Patel who posed as a journalist were trying to
extort money from Kaushik Brahmbhatt, the sanitary inspector. The two used to
file RTI applications for various contracts and even moved several applications
in the health department.
Later,
according to the crime branch, the two blackmailed Brahmbhatt and demanded Rs
50 lakh to withdraw the application. The prosecution also submitted that the
two later demanded Rs 15 lakh from the inspector and even took Rs 40,000 each
as monthly instalment.
The
prosecution in the remand application wanted to inquire if the two were really
RTI activist and journalist and also wanted to find out if the two had extorted
money from others. However, the court rejected the application.
