Union Government Should drop Neutrino Project

The Hindu: Madurai: Sunday, April 6, 2015.
The Union government should drop the India-based neutrino observatory (INO) project coming up at Pottipuram in Theni district, said members of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at a meeting here on Saturday.
AAP’s regional coordinator S. Sugumar said that the project should be scrapped as it not only threatened the environment, but endangered farming in the region.
Scientists may claim that natural resources would not be affected by the project, but the innocence of the people should never be exploited.
The AAP, he said, would oppose the project tooth and nail in public interest and stage demonstrations by garnering people’s support.
The meeting also condemned the Centre for its attempt to implement the Land Acquisition Bill through an ordinance by the President. The Narendra Modi government was bent upon pleasing some multinational corporations and big business houses to the detriment of the poor and farmers. The AAP would fight against the bill till it was dropped.
The flaws in the Right to Information Act (RTI) must be rectified. Since it was an instrument to expose corruption, improper and delayed response to applicants by officials would dilute the very utility of the RTI Act, the speakers said.
Earlier, the members heard views of participants about the need for a change in governance in Tamil Nadu. “It is high time the Dravidian regime ended, as the State was witnessing only corruption and not development,” the AAP members said. Party functionaries P. Gunasekaran, Muthu and Balakrishnan took part in the meeting.
