No more contract labour at Chandigarh's PGI

Times of India: Chandigarh: Sunday, 19 April 2015.
More than a decade old struggle demanding abolition of contract labour system at PGI, which started in 1996, came to an end after the central government issued gazette notification prohibiting engagement of contract labour.
Earlier, the Central Advisory Contract Labour Board - which is the only statutory authority under Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act - had recommended abolition of contract labour at PGI in its 84th meeting held last year on a petition filed by PGI Employees Union.
"There has been unreasonable delay in issuing gazette notification. Therefore, on October last year, the PGI Contract Workers Union filed a RTI application to know its status. It was informed under RTI that after finalization of the case and publication of notification, the requisite information may be provided but in vain," said Ashwani Munjal, president of the PGI union.
On March, the union filed first appeal under RTI which came up for hearing recently at New Delhi. "Though, the gazette notification was issued by central government on December 12, 2014, it came to light after the first appeal under RTI Act," said Munjal.
