Over 1,800 trees hacked in south and north-west Mumbai

DNA: Mumbai: Friday, 06 March 2015.
A reply to an RTI revealed that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chopped 1,802 trees between April 2014 and February 2015 across south and north-west Mumbai.
The RTI was filed a month ago by a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator. The reply also showed a lack of reasons given by the civic body for cutting the trees.
Around 1, 336 trees were axed between April 2012 and March 2013, while 721 trees were axed in 2013-14. "The numbers are shocking. I had raised this issue with the Municipal Commissioner in the past, however, to no avail. The BMC continues not act on such vital environmental issues," said Abbas Kapasi, member of Tree Authority, BMC.
