Guv pulls up RTU over lacunae in answer sheets

Governor Kalyan Singh has pulled up Rajasthan Technical University (RTU) for awarding marks without checking answer sheets.

A report highlighted that answer sheets of mechanical engineering branch of Kota Government Engineering College was found in a store house of Ajmer government engineering college unchecked on February 3 . The answer sheets were of final year students of academic session 2010 and the results of which were announced on time then.

Taking a stringent view, the governor has sought a point-wise status report from the RTU within a week. In a letter to the RTU, the chancellor (governor) has directed the VC to probe on what grounds the copies were left unchecked. Singh expressed anger on how results were declared without checking the copies. "The VC should conduct an inquiry and punish people responsible for the act. The copies should be sealed immediately and the university should find how many answer sheets were lying unchecked and to track those students who were cleared then," said Singh.

This is not a first case of such gross irregularity involving RTU. It is noted that recently a student filed an RTI application for disclosure of answer sheets and was surprised to learn that his copy was partly checked. Earlier on several occasions, RTU has found such irregularities and had to bar teachers from checking answer sheets. Sandeep Gupta, an educational activist said: "This case is just a tip of an iceberg which indicates mass corruption in RTU. The examiner seemed to have awarded marks on award list without checking the answer sheet because he knew that nobody will ask for the answer sheet."

Dinesh Birla, spokesperson, RTU is said to have not received any communication either from the VC office or governor house in this regard.

RTU is not following the normal practice of giving charge of examiner to those who have an experience of three years and answer sheets should be submitted in the institute. This case indicates that they have not followed the basics of random checking by main examiner.
