The Right to
Information (RTI) Act, 2005 was introduced in the country to provide vital
information of public interest to any person seeking it within a timeframe.
But the Act
has allegedly become an eyewash only as information sought under the Act is
denied to the seeker for months together. A certain journalist had sought some
information on the National Highway (four-lane construction at Naduar) by
submitting an application to the Sonitpur DC on September 12, 2014.
The State
Public Information Officer, through a letter, had informed the applicant that
he would get the information within 20 days, but till date, the journalist has
not received the required information.
A reminder
was sent by the applicant, but nothing has come out of it as yet. Such delays
will only discredit the RTI Act and may lead it to becoming only a farce.
