Delhi Police
Department, these days, is afflicted by the continuously increasing pressure of
RTI (Right to Information Act) requests.
If reports
are to be believed, then every year there is an average rise of 40% in the RTI
requests pouring in the department.
The
statistics received from the district police, related to the RTI cell are no
less than shocking. In 2006, only 17 people filed RTI to seek information from
the police cell however, since then the number is on a subsequent rise. It is
worth a mention that the Act was implemented in 2005.
By 2014, the
number of people seeking information from the department through RTIs has
reached somewhere around 1754 which means that if totaled then within nine
years, 6090 RTIs were filed to get information from the police department.
Interestingly,
the acknowledged requests include a good number from the officials of the
police department itself.
Officials of
the cell have told media that out of all the RTIs received; around 50 to 60%
are related to the police department only. These ranged from information
related to the official matters to travel allowances to manuals related to
financial benefits or perks.
Apart from
these, there had also been a good number of applications filed to seek
information related to calls made to the police control room.
Some of the
requests, at times, draw too much time and energy of the department. For
example, last year an applicant took help of RTI to get information related to
the head constable of traffic police.
