Maximum number of vehicles stolen from Kalyan: RTI

Times of India: Thane: Wednesday, 24 December 2014.
Mumbra tops the chart for the maximum number of house break-ins and theft, revealed a Right to Information (RTI) reply. The reply to the application filed by TOI disclosed that out of the total 1,398 cases recorded in the Thane police commissionerate, nearly 202 house break-ins and theft cases were recorded in Mumbra. However, areas under the Narpoli police station recorded the maximum stolen booty collectively worth Rs 4.97 crore as against those stolen from Mumbra that amounted to Rs 2.05 crore.
The cops believe that many youths are addicted to drugs and to finance it, they tend to indulge in house break-ins and theft. They sell the stolen booty at cheaper rates.
"In the past, many youngsters have confessed to steal valuables from houses and sell them at Chor Bazaar to buy drugs, specially Mephadrine," said a police officer.
Areas that come under the jurisdiction of the Naupada police seem to be the most unsafe given that Bhaskar Colony, Vishnu Nagar and Panchpakhadi have recorded the highest number of chain snatchings in Thane city. The information was disclosed through a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by TOI
Bike-borne robbers are taking advantage of the area's proximity to the highway, 39 entry and exit points and open service roads to snatch chains.
The sought information revealed that 72 chain snatching cases were reported from January to October this year at Naupada police station. Gold chains worth Rs 50.77 lakh were stolen out of which the cops have recovered stolen booty worth Rs 1.72 lakh in 15 cases.
Followed by Naupada, are the areas - Vasant Vihar and Pokhran Road II falling under the jurisdiction of the Vartak Nagar police station, which has registered 53 chain snatching cases during the same time. Out of these, only six cases have been detected.
Statistics revealed that in all the 33 police stations under the Thane police commissionerate, bike-borne thieves target areas that fall under the Mahatma Phule police's jurisdiction in Kalyan. "Most of the Irani gang members are involved in chain snatching. The infamous Ambivali area, where these people reside, comes under the Mahatma Phule police's control. Thieves prefer to target nearby localities instead of putting themselves at the risk of getting caught by targeting far-off areas," said an official from the crime branch.
The information also disclosed that the said Kalyan area saw the highest number of motor vehicle theft under the Thane police commissionerate. As many as 133 cases were recorded here with only 28 vehicles being recovered. This is followed by Mumbra with 103 thefts recorded.
"Most of the bikes used for snatching chains are stolen from roadsides though most bikes are dismantled and sold in the market at a lower rate," said a senior police officer.
