The
Hindu: Madurai: Sunday, 12 October 2014.
More than 300
people from Usilampatti, Peraiyur, Vadipatti and Madurai North taluks and
members of Tamil Nadu Land Rights Federation staged a demonstration near the
Collectorate here on Friday, demanding retrieval of panchami lands.
“After filing
queries under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, we came to know that there
are many ‘panchami’ lands that should rightfully belong to Dalits in these
taluks but have been encroached upon. We submitted numerous petitions at
‘jamabandi’ conducted in June but have not received any response,” said V.
Baskaran, president of the federation.
The
protesters demanded that they be given five acres of land each for undertaking
agricultural activities and 20 cents for building houses.
