An RTI
application has disclosed that the speed of internet connection at Prime
Minister’s Office is relatively much faster, at 34 Mbps (megabytes per second),
than the rest of the country, at 2Mbps.
The RTI
application was filed by Vinod Ranganathan, cofounder of onlinerti.com. The
response informed him that the National Informatics Centre (NIC) is providing
an average of 34Mbps speed to the PMO office.
Times of
India quotes Ranganathan saying, "There is nothing wrong for our PM to
have 34Mbps speed internet. As the Prime Minister, he should have a better
connectivity. Google fibre in the US provides 1 Gbps (Gigabytes per second)
connectivity to ordinary citizens.”
As per the
latest "State of the Internet" quarterly report by Akamai, internet
content delivery network, India ranks 115 in the world. South Korea has the
maximum internet speed with 24.6Mbps.
The average
peak connection speed in India is 14Mbps.
