The state
government has appointed Shankar R Patil, a retired KAS official, as an
Information Commissioner at the Karnataka State Information Commission.
Governor
Vajubhai Vala is said to have given his assent to the proposal to appoint Patil
as Information Commissioner. Two Information Commissioner posts have been
vacant for the last 18 months.
The Cabinet,
chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, had recently recommended Patil for the
post and sought the Raj Bhavan’s formal approval.
Patil, who
hails from Bidar, is the first person from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region to be
nominated to the Information Commission. A 1978-batch KAS officer, Patil has
worked in several capacities during his 35-year service.
On his
appointment, he said, “I will take this opportunity to serve the society by
upholding the principles of the commission and ensuring the delivery of state
services to the people in a more transparent manner.”
According to
official sources, apart from Patil, the Governor has also approved the name of
L Krishna Murthy, a social worker and RTI activist, to the second post.
