Times of India: Mohali: Wednesday, 09 July 2014.
A
Mohali-based RTI activist has lodged a police complaint against a sarpanch and
her husband for assaulting his mother and threatening him after the activist
'exposed' a scam in a project being implemented under the MNREGA scheme.
Jasbir Singh,
a resident of Giga Mazra village of Mohali district, approached the Mohali
police after his mother was assaulted on July 1. In the complaint filed on July
3, Singh has named Giga Mazra sarpanch Charanjit Kaur and her husband Bahadur
Singh and accused them of threatening him.
Using RTI,
Singh had last month 'exposed' scam in salaries given under MNREGA to 14
residents of the village.
Singh had
brought to light the fact that even though the project of rural connectivity
and water conservation was stopped, the 14 residents were still getting paid.
Following the 'expose,' an inquiry was marked by MNREGA director, Punjab,
Devinder Kaur Bhuttar, last month.
The probe
report was awaited. Singh told TOI that he was being threatened as by
unearthing the scam, he has harmed the interest of many people.
"They
offered me bribe, threatened me on roads and on July 1 when my mother was
alone, some people attacked her. These people can kill me or any of my family
members anytime," said Singh.
When
contacted, Devinder Kaur Bhuttar said, "We are investigating the fraud and
hopefully within a week we will come to know what exactly happened."
Mohali SSP
Inder Mohan Bhatti said the department was looking into the complaint and only
after that any action would be taken.
Giga Mazra
sarpanch and her husband could not be contacted for comments despite repeated
attempts.
