A query
sought under Right to information (RTI) Act by Abhay Kolarkar has unearthed the
fact that city police's traffic wing did not haul up any violators for
breaching the norms of silence zone in the period between January 2013 and
March 31 this year. Though there are several stretches of silence zone in the
city, traffic police's nil action on heavy vehicles breaking the norm has been
baffling.
The RTI
reply, issued by public information officer MS Gawde, also ACP traffic, has
shown that none of the six divisions of his unit could take actions against
heavy vehicles breaching silence zone norms which have also deprived the
government exchequer of any fine collected for such violations.
In the last
15 months, traffic police's performances against red-light jumpers, drunk
drivers, errant autorickshaws and such others have remained substantial. The
RTI reply showed that fine of Rs 42,71,600 have been collected in 30,123 cases
from violators pulled up for ignoring traffic signal. The traffic wing has also
amassed 1,63,92,900 fine from 18,273 cases of drunken driving. The unit has
also collected fine Rs 30,18,604 from 29,049 cases against errant autorickshaw
drivers.
The RTI reply
also brought the focus on the 373 deaths in mishaps between January 2013 and
March 2014. 1,513 persons were injured in 1,516 cases of accidents.
