Times of India: Rourkela: Tuesday, March 11, 2014.
Information
collected through Right to Information (RTI) has revealed that rejected
refractory bricks worth over crores are rotting in Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) said RSP stood on the bottom among all
SAIL plants in terms of revenue generated from sale of used rejected refractory
bricks.
According to
information procured by RTI activist Aditya Mohapatra, RSP generated Rs
2.22-crore revenue from sale of old refractory bricks from 2009 to 2013 where
as SAIL units like Bhilai Steel Plant generated Rs 16.84 crore, Durgapur Steel
Plant Rs 9.63 crore and Bokaro Steel Plant mopped up Rs 4.74 crore during the
same period.
Revenue
generated through sale of such bricks clearly shows RSP is losing crores of
rupees every year on this front although there are a large number of buyers,
Mohapatra said. According to RSP sources, there are a few types of bricks like
Mac Carbon Bricks, which goes to waste if it is not sold within three to four
months.
RSP defended
itself, saying they are taking all efforts to salvage the bricks. Some Mac
Carbon Bricks were auctioned in February, said an RSP source.
As RSP is not
very keen on selling these bricks, about one dozen small and medium refractory
units of the state, who use these bricks as raw material, are compelled to
procure these from outside the state, said plant sources.
