RTI query reveals MERC not serious on power audit

Free Press Journal: Mumbai: Wednesday, March 19, 2014.
While the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) was asked to do an audit of power companies, a Right to Information query has revealed that only after three years period the audit was completed. The half-hearted approach to this audit is seen as in its reply, MERC has not even verified the income and expenditure figures. RTI activist Anil Galgali said, “After a gap of three years the MERC decided to conduct an audit, they published an advertisement in May 2013 and this very advertisement was cancelled. The bid was for Rs 1,11403 by a firm for finalization of accounts and preparation, filing of TDS and Service tax returns in said fees. The figures given by RTI reply and Income & Expenditure shown in tender are not matched.”
