Parent of one
of the 70-odd standard XI commerce students from SP College whose admissions
were recently cancelled by the state education department have written to the
same, stating that irregularities in the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) is
responsible for their predicament. Shubham Bafna was one of the students whose
admission was termed illegal after a backdoor admission racket came to the
fore.
His mother
Vaishali Dipak Bafna wants to prove her son as a deserving candidate and filed
an RTI information seeking information of cut-offs from five different colleges
in the city.
In her letter
to the education department, she claimed that the RTI information revealed that
the colleges had given many admissions below the cut-off percentages which
reveals that many deserving students did not get admissions in these colleges.
As per the
information sought, colleges like Modern, Garware, Wadia, Symbiosis and MMCC
had given admissions to students below the cut off percentages,
Demanding a
probe in the matter, Vaishali said that many students like her son were forced
to resort to backdoor admissions in such scenarios. His father said that in
July 2013, his son got the admission in VIT College through CAP.
However,
since the college was far from home, they had requested the deputy director to
change his college. They notified CAP officials that instead of his son, the
admission was given in the name of his wife and also requested to rectify the
mistake.
He alleged
that the officials told them to take the admission wherever they want.
“As per the
instructions, we approached many colleges and SP College had assured us of
admission. However, later the admissions of the SP College were declared
illegal and deputy director office then decided to accommodate 70 students in
other colleges,” he said.
He added that
the deputy director office again denied the admission without citing any
reason. “Because of the apathetic approach by the officials, my son has lost
one year,” he said. Bafnas then decided to take on the colleges and filed RTI
applications to the six prominent colleges out of which they have received
reply from five colleges. “This is just the tip of the iceberg as we have a
strong suspicion that similar malpractices are in being conducted in otehr
colleges too,” he said.
Commissioner
of the education, S Choklingam said that they have received the complaint
application and it has been forwarded to the concerned authorities for inquiry.
Principal of the Modern College Rajendra Zunjarrao refused to comment.
