Sports minister misused funds: RTI

Times of India: Gurgaon: Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
Brewing a fresh controversy, RTI documents released by local unit of BJP has put Gurgaon MLA and Haryana minister of state for sports Sukhbir Kataria in dock for allegedly misusing his discretionary fund to aid a selected few.
According to documents provided under RTI to Umesh Aggarwal, the beneficiaries who were given this grant for being poor are actually school managements, government employees, his own assistants and even a local journalist.
The list of beneficiaries also has Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon which got huge amount for construction of cemented roads. Ironically, these roads were built in-front of the houses of people close to Kataria.
"We have got this information from district development and panchayat officer (DDPO). It highlights how Katraia is misusing his position to keep influential on his side. It's pity that everything right from MCG to schools and even journalists are being managed with discretionary funds meant for development of district," said Umesh Aggarwal, state media convener of the BJP.
As per the RTI documents, minister Kataria was given his discretionary fund for October 2009 to March, 31, 2013. He had given Rs 23 lakh to Happy Model School, Rs 16 lakh to AVR school, Rs 13.5 lakh to Our Lady Fatima School, Rs 17 lakh to Sheetla Vidyapeeth but only Rs 1.13 lakh was given to one government women college of city.
Same minister provided Rs 17 lakh to Guru Dronacharya Sewa Samiti and Rs 16 lakh to Gurgaon village RWA. "The beneficiaries took aid in lieu of clothes and medicines for their families saying they are "poor", added Umesh Aggarwal.
The minister could not contacted as his mobile phone was switched off.
