Parents take RTI route to find out fee details

Deccan Chronicle: Chennai: Saturday, June 15, 2013.
Parents are now taking RTI route to find out how the school fee fixation committee had fixed fees for various schools. This is not the first time that over 500 parents will use this Act en masse to take on private schools.
Speaking to DC on Thursday, S. Arumainathan, president, Federation of Tamil Nadu Students’ Parents’ Welfare Association, flayed private schools fee determination committee headed by Justice S.R. Singaravelu as it had fixed exorbitant amounts as fees for several CBSE schools. “We were shocked when the committee uploaded the revised fees structure on the government website. The fee is much higher than what it had fixed last year. It is not clear how the committee fixed such a huge amount as fees,” he said.
Pointing out that their federation would file several petitions under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Arumainathan said that, as the committee had failed to display records filed by schools, over 500 parents would file RTI petitions with the committee for perusal of records.
“We have already taken up to the committee several cases of schools which collected excess fees. Schools still continue to violate the committee’s order”, he said.
“We hope to look into the documents to ascertain whether schools have provided true details and also crosscheck it with physical inspection. I’ve heard about how people have succeeded in several cases with details they had received through RTI petition.” Sunder Rajan, a parent said.
