Contraceptive failure main reason behind abortions in MP

Times of India: Bhopal: Thursday, June 13, 2013.
More than 30,000 abortions were carried out in the state in past one year due to failure of contraceptives. Replying to an RTI query by TOI, the directorate of health has informed that a total of 34,091 abortions were carried out in state in the past one year as per the provisions of the MTP Act.
"As per the act, there are six reasons for which medical termination of pregnancy is allowed. In nearly 90 per cent of the cases, patients mention failure of contraceptives as the reason for undergoing MTP," said Dr SK Dwivedi, in charge of the implementation of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act in state.
A maximum of 11,296 abortions were carried out in Bhopal, followed by 3,599 in Gwalior, 1,850 in Indore, 1,409 in Jabalpur and 1,278 in Dhar district between January 2012 and January 2013. In all the 50 districts of the state, a total of around 34,091 MTPs were carried out in the same period.
Highly placed sources in the health department said that though some of the cases of failure of contraceptives were genuine, many people were giving this reason even while opting for foeticide after detection of gender.
Once the abortion is done, it is almost impossible to ascertain whether the contraceptive that was used failed or not, said sources pleading anonymity. Health staff can do little in cases where patients cite failure of contraceptives as the ground for termination of pregnancy, they added.
