32,000 grads yet to get degrees, RTI reveals

Deccan Herald: Jammu: Wednesday, June 12, 2013.
Over 32,000 former students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are waiting to get their degree certificates from Jammu University, which includes students from 2006 to 2011 batch.
The university has not granted graduate and postgraduate certificates to 32,120 former students, including 26,564 graduates and 5,556 postgraduates, with delay ranging from 2006-07 to 2010-11.
This information was made public by the university in reply to an application under the Right to Information Act.
“The total number of successful candidates who have not been issued graduation degrees from session 2006-07 onwards are 26,564,” the University stated in response to the RTI query.
Postgraduates;
The total number of postgraduate candidates eligible for degrees from session 2009 onwards are 2,256 of session 2010 and 3,300 of session 2011, the university said.
Interestingly, a student who completed her Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science from Jammu University in 2008 is yet to get her degree from the institute, though she has got her postgraduate degree certificate in Bio-Technology from a different university.
“I got my postgraduate degree, but I am still awaiting for the degree certificate of my graduation, which I pursued from Jammu University,” said the student.
Another student said, “I completed my graduation in Commerce in 2009-2010, and I applied for the degree certificate. But till now I haven’t received my degree certificate from the university. I could not even apply for the Service Selection Commission (SSC) exam because of unavailability of the degree.”
On the reasons behind the huge backlog, university officials did not come up with a satisfactory answer. “More than 30,000 students graduate from the University of Jammu every year, keeping that in mind these numbers are very less,” said special secretary to the vice chancellor Jammu University, Jai Kumar Sharma.
Inordinate delay;
On the inordinate delay in awarding degrees to students, he called up the department of Controller of Examinations and asked him to clear the backlog within a week.
He also directed the Controller of Examinations to take corrective action against the officials concerned.
The Controller of Examinations, Keshav Sharma, who recently took over the department, said, “I assure you that every possible step will be taken to ensure that the degrees are awarded to students.”
