The number of
people, who have gone missing, has doubled in the last three years. And the
disturbing trend is that the number of women in the age bracket in which people
go missing is almost double as compared to that of men.
These
revelations were made after an RTI application was filed by Chetan Kothari.
The total
number of missing complaints registered with those not found has seen a rise of
11.8% as on 2010 to 31.49% as on March 2013. During the same period, the total
number of missing complaints lodged has increased from 9,505 in 2010 to 15,755
in 2012 and the figure stood at 2,949 until March 2013.
Among those
missing, the jump is seen most in the young adult population in the age bracket
of 16 to 25 years followed by those in age bracket of 26 to 40 years. Number of
missing females in this category is twice
those of males. While 4,290 people went missing in 2010, the figure
jumped to 7,968 in 2012. The figure
stood at 1,474 till March 2013. In 2010,
there were 2,900 complaints of missing females – 45.13% of total complaints. In
2012 it was 5,250.
