Times of India: Ahmedabad: Saturday, May 11, 2013.
Daily abuse by a son and his wife has pushed an
elderly couple to seek the city collector's permission to end their lives.
Bhau Das Gridhari Balda (64) and his wife Leela
Balda (63) are residents of Meghaninagar in Ahmedabad. Bhau Das, who used to
work in a textile mill, bought the house in Gujarat Housing Society some 19
years back with all his savings. Now, his son Manish, who is an alcoholic,
beats them up every day. Their daughter-in-law threatens to sue them under the
anti-dowry law and throw them out of the house.
"We are completely helpless. Our life is one
of constant abuse at the hands of our son and daughter-in-law. We want
death," the couple said.
The couple first approached the Meghaninagar
police station and gave a written complaint but no action was taken. Later,
they gave a written complaint to the SDM in February last year. But their complaint
again fell on deaf ears. They even filed an RTI application to know the status
of their complaint but no answer was given by the authorities.
Bhau Das and his wife ran from pillar to post for
action on their complaint. Their son and daughter-in-law continued to ill-treat
them. Finally, on Friday they made an application to the collector.
The Collector's office has received the complaint
and forwarded it to the police commissioner. It has also asked the commissioner
to take action against the son and daughter in-law under the Maintenance and
Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act.
