A few months
ago, the story of international kabaddi player Vindhyawasini Kumari of Bokaro
was highlighted in Jharkhand. Along with her achievements, all unfulfilled
promises made to Vindhyawasini and her family's condition were highlighted.
Lakhs of
readers went through that story but one, Ganesh Kumar Citu, a Right to
Information activist from Hazaribagh, handled it differently. He filed an RTI
petition with the CM's Secretariat on August 16, and on November 10, he was
informed that the Ministry had issued a draft according to norms, in the name
of Vindhyawasini.
A couple of
days later, Vindhyawasini thanked Ganesh over the phone for bringing light to
her Deepawali with RTI. According to Ganesh, when he filed the RTI petition, he
was hopeful the Government would soon take steps to fulfill the promise made by
the CM.
Next month,
he was informed that the petition has been forwarded to the Ministry of Sports,
Culture & Youth Affairs. When he got no reply from the Ministry within the
stipulated time, he filed the first appeal. Again there was no reply, so on
November 10, he sent a second appeal but from a post office. When Ganesh returned
home, he got the letter of the Ministry.
Nonetheless,
the RTI activist is set to continue his fight because he says that though prize
money has been given to Vindhyawasini, but the service promise is still a pipe
dream.
