If the department of information is still in good shape, the credit goes to the first principal information officer of the unified Karnataka in the then Mysore state B N Sri Satyan, said journalist Krishna Vattam.
He was speaking after inaugurating a programme ‘Path of Information’ organised by the department of information and publicity on Saturday to recollect the contribution of Sri Satyan.
Taking a cue from the Central government, the department came into existence in the state. It was intended to bridge a gap between the government and the people. The department also succeeded in its endeavour by emerging as a web of information. The impact was such that the journalists were waiting for the press kits.
Vattam said those were the days, when all were rare, from press meets to programmes and the journalists association was also not much active. Hence, the scribes had to depend on the department. Most importantly, the measures to control population which didn’t have much takers earlier. The people were afraid of buying the concept, and it was the documentaries screened then, that played a vital role in effectively convincing the masses.
Retired information officer and deputy secretary K C Bheemaiah sang paeans of Sri Satyan describing him as an officer who was highly disciplined and honest. Another retired officer K Vijaykumar, who has served as a joint director was proud to remark that the department has still retained its glint among several other departments. Sujata Bhagwan, daughter of Sri Satyan was happy to note that the government had taken an initiative in remembrance of her father during his birth centenary.
Deputy director for information A R Prakash, information officer from Mandya R Raju, coordinator of Nehru Yuva Kendra Nataraj, journalist K Ramanna and others were present.
