‘Men continue to travel in women’s compartment’

Deccan Herald: New Delhi: Monday, March 19, 2012.
For the comfort and security of female passengers the Delhi Metro has reserved one coach for women and has made unlawful entry of male passengers into the coach a punishable offence.
However, the measure has failed to deter men from entering the reserved coach.
A total of 3,697 male passengers were booked for travelling in women's coach last year, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in an RTI reply.
Apart from that, 295 male passengers were penalised during a one week special drive conducted by Delhi Metro in February this year.
“In total, there have been 11,731 cases wherein people have been penalised for committing several offences in the metro premises.
“The maximum cases of offence occurred in the Yellow Line (Jahangirpuri – Huda City Centre),” added the RTI.
Some of the other major offences under which commuters were booked includes creating nuisance (1370), drunkenness (496), spitting (2894), unlawful entry and walking on metro track (1717) and defacing metro property (1107).
The offenders were booked under the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002.
The top five stations where maximum penalties were imposed in 2011 are Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Yamuna Bank and New Delhi. The first four stations witness maximum footfall.
As per the rules, the DMRC slapped monetary punishment against all the commuters caught breaking law.
The collection against the offences committed under the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002 made the DMRC richer by Rs 25,51,274 in 2011.
While travelling in women's coach invites a fine of Rs 250, commuters who are found creating nuisance, travelling in drunken state, spitting and defacing metro properties are a fined Rs 200 each.
