India’s pride, the Gol Gumbuz -a 17th century tomb in Karnataka built by the sultan of Bijapur but that’s just for picture post cards. For this is the reality of the heritage monument encroached by these houses and shops, clearly neglected and on the road to destruction. But Gol Gumbuz is not the only monument that has been ignored in Karnataka.
In a reply to an RTI, Government confirms that 10% of monuments in Karnataka have been encroached upon Instances of illegal/unauthorised construction & encroachment on 59 state protected monuments in Karnataka. But ask the minister in-charge in Karnataka -and the blame game begins and if it’s not blame game - it is excuses like this one.
Govind Karjol, Karnataka Culture Minister, said, “The monuments that are under the Central Govt, the ASI takes care of. I can only take of things under my jurisdiction, and I will when something comes to my notice.” While those in charge of protecting India’s heritage live in denial, these monuments, the remains of the nation's rich history are now the shameful reminders of India’s neglect.
