PANIPAT: The district police on Thursday arrested SI Pratap Sharma along with Kamala Kashyup alias Shalu on the charges of running a blackmailing racket which was busted following a complaint filed by a local industrialist.
The complainant had alleged that money was extracted from him after filing false complaints of sexual harassment against him. The IG ordered DSP Virender Vij to conduct an inquiry into the allegations, which established that sub-inspector Pratap Sharma along with four women Sunita Sharma, Shalu, Sania and Saroj -- had tried to extract money from Pratap Singh, a local industrialist on the pretext of having received complaint of sexual harassment against him.
As per the complaint filed by Pratap Singh in March this year, he received a call from Sunita Sharma, who told him that two women who used to work in his factory had got a case of sexual harassment registered against him. She told him that if he was ready to pay Rs 5 lakh, she could mediate and settle the matter without litigation.
Fearing social ramification, Singh said he asked one of his friends, Mohan to meet Sunita and settle the matter. The deal was finalized at Rs 1.5 lakh. Singh paid the two women Rs 1.5 lakh in presence of SI Pratap Sharma. However, when he asked for written copy of the settlement, the sub inspector demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for helping him out.
Singh said in order to get to the bottom of it all, he used the RTI Act to seek information about the case registered against him and the copy of settlement. In reply to the RTI, the police department stated that only a complaint had been received and no case was ever registered. Following this, Singh filed a complaint with IG V Kamaraj, who asked the DSP to look into the matter. In his inquiry, DSP found that the cop and four women were running a blackmailing racket. They would conspire against wealthy industrialists by filing false complaints against them. It was also found that group had made attempts to extract money from two other industrialists using same tactics.
After the report was submitted by the DSP, a case was registered against the five. The action came only after the high court on August 29 ordered the police arrest the accused before September 27. The two arrested accused were produced before a local court on Thursday that ordered police remand for three days.
