Union home minister P. Chidambaram on Monday said that if a request is received by the Central government, the CBI may conduct a probe into RTI activist Shehla Masood’s murder case.
“I cannot express a political opinion here...It is a serious matter. If there is a letter, we will certainly address it with the urgency it requires. If there is a request that the case be taken over by CBI, certainly in consultation with the department of personnel and the CBI, we will take an appropriate decision, but first there must be reference from the (federal) government,” he said at a press conference.
On whether Masood had written any letter to MHA seeking security before her murder, Mr Chidambaram said, “I can’t recall having received any letter”. Union home secretary R.K. Singh also pleaded ignorance about receiving any such letter from the activist.
On concerns about Unique Identification Authority seeking separate funding to independently collect biometric details across the country possibly leading to duplicity of effort along with the national population register, the minister said that the issue would be discussed by the PM council for UID. He also rejected claims that without a UID Act in place, the body could not collect data maintaining that the cabinet had cleared the UID project.
The home minister also said in his monthly report card that a Presidential order was issued on August 12 for the deletion of section 14(f) of the Andhra pradesh Public Employment (organisation of local cadres and regulation of direct recruitment) Order, 1975.
