Uterus removal case: Hospitals counter NGO charges.

Times of India; Jaipur; Thursday, April 21, 2011,
JAIPUR: In the case of removal of uterus of hundreds of women in Bandikui in Dausa district, the five private hospitals countered the charges levelled by the NGO, and also alleged that someone is maligning the image of the hospitals.
An RTI application had exposed that these private hospitals have removed the uterus of hundreds of women for money.
Honorary state secretary of Jaipur Medical Association said, "We are not supporting the hospitals but we are putting the facts before the media," Sharma said at a press conference at the JMA office on Wednesday.
The doctors claimed that in the past one year, 2901 operations were conducted in these hospitals of which 840 were of uterus. The number of uterus operations is much less than the NGO's claims, they said. The NGO Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat had put the number of uterus operations at 85-90% of the total operations conducted.
The hospitals also claimed that uterus cannot be transplanted. "So, a doctor cannot sell the uterus," a doctor said.
The doctors also claimed that they charge around Rs 5,000-Rs7,000 for an uterus operation which is nominal, and that such operations are also performed at the Mahila Chikitsalya.
The RTI application had alleged that doctor earn Rs 12,000-Rs 14,000 for removing the uterus of a patient.
The NGO however, denied the charges and said the hospitals are trying to misguide the government team formed by the Dausa collector to probe the matter.
NGO's general secretary Durga Prasad Saini said, "The matter is clear that the uterus of hundreds of women were removed by the doctors, as stated in the RTI. Now, the doctors are trying to misguide the investigating team by levelling such baseless allegations."
He added that the state government should set up a high-level committee to investigate the matter.
