Cabinet Secretariat must maintain information on ministers’ trips: CIC

Tanu Sharma: Indian Express; Tue Apr 05 2011,
New Delhi : Chief Information Commissioner Satyananda Mishra has asked Cabinet Secretariat to keep with it “key information” pertaining to travel details of Union ministers, which is, otherwise, maintained by individual ministries and departments. While disposing of an appeal where an applicant had asked for details of air travel of Union ministers during last three years, Mishra said that it would be desirable “if key information regarding travel details is maintained at the Cabinet Secretariat itself”, as it would be in the “interest of transparency” for the information seekers under the RTI Act.
The government response was that information pertaining to travel details both domestic and international is “scattered” and available with Central government ministries and departments. It could be sought from the respective CPIOs.
Countering this view, the CIC asked the competent authority in the Cabinet Secretariat to take appropriate action in the matter and keep key information about details and expenditure incurred by the ministers with regard to their trips within and outside the country “at one central place”.
