Police shielding officer accused of harassing young journalist
In allegedly shielding one of its own, the Delhi police has forgotten that the man is question has even turned against them. It has been learned that a Special Operations Staff inspector Rajpal Dabas, who is accused of harassing a young journalist and sending her lewd SMSes, allegedly hacked into the e-mail of his senior officer to get the call details of his victim.
The fact was revealed in an RTI filed by the victim, after efforts to lodge and FIR failed. The RTI plea was filed on September 1, 2010. Inspector Dabas accessed the call details of the victim through a request sent to the service provider through the e-mail ID of his senior officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Sources told MiD DAY that Dabas could not have got the details himself unless he had his request endorsed by a senior official. "The RTI plea revealed that Dabas accessed my call details, illegally, 27 times in the last six months. I complained to the senior police officers about him but they didn't even lodge an FIR against him, he was just transferred. I am still scared that he could trace my mobile number again and harass me," the victim told MiD DAY.
She and Inspector Dabas were friends some time ago but then when the victim stopped meeting the inspector, he allegedly started sending her threatening messages and then "spread rumours," about their relationship using the call details.
Majority of senior police officers remained tight-lipped about the issue and refused to comment. One of them said the probe is in the primary stages.
