The Hindu: Coimbatore: Thursday,
5 December 2024.
K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, has filed an appeal with the Tamil Nadu Information Commission after the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) failed to provide information on unauthorised public buildings in the Central Zone from 2019 to April 2024.
The request, made under the Right to Information Act (RTI), follows a previous instance where the same body received information for the period 1996-2006 based on a directive from the Information Commission.
Mr. Kathirmathiyon said, “The Information Commission had previously imposed a fine on the Commissioner for failing to comply. Now, despite clear instructions, the authorities are withholding information.”
He explained that in 2006, after repeated refusals to provide requested information, the Information Commission had directed the CCMC Commissioner to release the data within six days and imposed a fine for non-compliance. “This refusal is a disregard of the Commission’s order, and I am seeking penal action against the Public Information Officer (AC Central Zone) and Appellate Authority (Deputy Commissioner) under the RTI Act for failing to release the data,” he added, requesting the Commission to enforce its earlier ruling
