RTI activist Bhimappa Gadad alleged that several officials and land sharks illegally grabbed 762 acres and 20 gunta of govt land in Belagavi district with the support of ministers and public representatives. He claimed this was state's largest land scam.
According to Gadad, in Devanakatti village of Raibag taluk, 254 acres of land 152 acres and 20 gunta in survey No. 59 and 101 acres and 20 gunta in survey No. 79 was supposed to be mentioned as govt land in the right of records. As this was not done, officials and private people grabbed the land by registering it in the names of private parties.
"Similarly, according to old land records available under the RTI Act, govt land of 508 acres and 20 gunta in survey No. 03 in Huland village of Jamboti hobli in Khanapur taluk belonged to villagers. However, by removing the phrase ‘Oorina ella janaru' (all people of the village) from the right of records on Oct 15, 2024, Khanapur tahsildar made a blunder. By doing this, the tahsildar deceived govt," Gadad said at a press conference.
"I have been following up with govt in the last two months regarding the land issue in Devanakatti village in Raibag taluk. However, no action was taken," he said. "Altogether, 762 acres belong to govt. But, due to pressure from influential people, the officials are not mentioning the same in the right of records," he added. Gadad urged the opposition leaders to raise the issue of land grabbing in the House to protect the rights of the general public instead of engaging in Muda and waqf issues.
