RTI activist murder in Chengalpet: 7 including lawyer held

Times of India: Chennai: Monday, 01 May 2023.
Less than 24 hours after a gang murdered an RTI activist near Chengalpet, after he had approaching police over getting death threats for moving the Madras high court to remove encroachments in Thirukazhukundram, police on Sunday arrested seven suspects including a lawyer and launched a hunt for two more.
The attack of Sarbudeen, a resident of Rudhrankoil Street in Thirukazhukundram, with the assailants repeatedly attacking him with sickles and knives till he collapsed to the ground, was caught on a CCTV camera and helped police crack the case. The slain man is survived by his wife and their three daughters.
Sarbudeen first approached the Chengalpet collector, asking him to order including a removal of encroachments on Market Street and Mosque Street in Thirukazhukundram. When there was no desired response, he filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Madras high court which directed the district authorities to take appropriate action.
On Saturday morning, he received a threat call and filed a complaint with police. In the afternoon, near Mettu Mangalam, he got into a car when a gang on two bikes attacked him with deadly weapons.
Police later arrested Rahman, Mansoor Ali, Ibrahim, Naseem, Rahman, Farooque and Vellai Saleem, with the last named, a lawyer, the mastermind.
