RTI reply: 298 applications in 2 years for new colleges, Maharashtra government approved 1

The Indian Express: Mumbai: Tuesday, 01 September 2015.
A Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed that over the past two years, the state government has given approval to just one degree college in response to 298 applications it had received.
RTI activist, Anil Galgali, who had filed the application, said “politicians have set up their own education empire and now the state has decided not to grant approval to any new college”.
“During 2014-15, the higher and technical education department of the state received 130 applications for new colleges. Out of this, only one application from a Jalgaon-based college was approved. Out of the 129 applications, 46 were issued letters of intent (LoI), but approvals were not given,” the RTI reply stated.
It added, “In 2015-16, applications for 168 new colleges were submitted to the state government, but the government in the current academic year has taken a decision to not give permission to any new college due to which all the applications have been sent back to the respective universities.”
The RTI reply stated that the proposals did not fulfill the criteria set by the government, including non-availability of non-agriculture (NA) certificate and documents related to building.
