District Minister laments misuse of RTI Act by vested interests

Star of Mysore: Mysore: Wednesday, 16 July 2025.
Lamenting that the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which was supposed to be of help to the public, has become a tool in the hands of vested interests, District Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa said that the significance of the Act has been overshadowed by misuse.
He was speaking at ‘Nyayada Dikku, Mahiti Hakku,’ a State-level workshop organised by Karnataka Rajya Mahiti Hakku Vedike, State Unit, at the Institution of Engineers-India (IEI) on JLB Road here on Saturday.
Maintaining that the misuse of the RTI Act has dealt a big blow to the effective Act, Dr. Mahadevappa said that our Constitution is an open one.
Pointing out that it was the Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government at the Centre which introduced the RTI Act with an objective of enabling the public to get information in a transparent manner, he said that the Act signals a warning to corruption and corrupt practices. But some vested interests have been misusing the Act to target individuals and to serve their own purpose. As such, the Act, which is people friendly, is losing its original form and way, he regretted.
Noted personality development trainer R.A. Chethan Ram opined that it is impossible to change the society if we do no change our attitude. Observing that RTI is helpful for everyone to tread the path of justice, he said that we should first understand our personality before getting that right.
Stressing on the need to understand ourself whether we are on the right path, before questioning the world, he said that doing so will get more value for our words. Noting that Jnana, Vijnana, Tantragnana and Sujnana are the key factors  for growth in life, Chethan Ram said that it is possible to find a new path by having new thoughts relentlessly.
“But it is bemoaning to note that we are giving less work to our brains. We tend to mentally collapse when we make wrong moves or failed efforts. Instead, we can achieve success if we correct our wrongs and move forward,” he said.
Stressing on the need for following Basavanna’s ideology of ‘Kayakave Kailasa’ (Work is Worship), Chethan Ram said even saints and revered leaders of the land have also preached this. “We have come to the world by accident. It is inevitable for everyone to lead this world on a future date. In between this, let us try to contribute to the society, which gave us an opportunity to live and lead life,” he noted.
Chethan Ram released the book titled ‘Akrama Kattadagala Nirmana: Sarvochha Nyayalayada Ankusha’ on the occasion.
Former Principal of Maharaja’s College Prof. Kalachannegowda spoke at the valedictory held later in the evening.
Vedike State Unit Founder-President Hemanth Nagaraju, Consumer Rights & RTI Expert Y.G. Muralidharan, Basava Marga Foundation Rehabilitation and De-addiction Centre President S. Basavaraju, Bengaluru’s RTI Study Centre’s Veeresh Bellur, Mysuru District Journalists Association (MDJA) President K. Deepak and others were present.
