Govt., RTI panel on collision course

The Hindu: Thiruvananthapuram: Saturday, July 16, 2016.
The State government and the State Information Commission (SIC) appear to be on a collision course with the latter insisting on the government releasing information relating to Cabinet decisions under the Right to Information Act and the government refusing to heed its order.
The commission had issued the order based on a petition filed by RTI activist D.B. Binu. Although the request was for documents relating to the several controversial decisions taken by the Oommen Chandy Cabinet, the new government is reported to be of the view that releasing the documents relating to the last government would compel it to do so whenever there is a similar request about its own decisions.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) was highly critical of the Oommen Chandy for its refusal to provide information regarding its decisions under the RTI Act, but has chosen not to provide the same information now.
Meanwhile, State Information Commissioner Vinson M. Paul told a TV channel that nobody had approached him with the complaint that information on Cabinet decisions sought under provisions RTI Act was not being released. If there was any such complaint, the commission would certainly look into it and take legal measures, he said.
