The two-day
seminar on 'Eight years of Right to Information Act and role of civil society'
organised by Society for Media and Social Development in association with Media
Information and Communication Centre of India began at Mahatma Gandhi
KashiVidyapith on Saturday.
Addressing
the inaugural function, the central information commissioner Deepak Sandhu said
that the RTI Act is like a 'sanjeevani' for the poor. It is the active role of
NGOs and civil society that the RTI Act could become effective, she said adding
that it is essential to select appropriate questions to get required
information. She also cautioned against the misuse of the Act.The function was
also addressed by deputy registrar of Banaras Hindu University ShyamNarayan,
lawyer AshokSehgal, former central information commissioner OP Kejriwal and
others.
