Durga temple 'conceals' assets, shirks RTI Act

The New Indian Express: Vijayawada: Tuesday, March 26, 2013.
Officials of Kanakadurga temple have paid no heed to the direction of state information commissioner P Vijaya Babu to display boards containing details of movable and immovable properties of  Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam under the Right to Information Act.
The information commissioner, who visited the temple in August last year, directed the authorities in this regard. The temple authorities were asked to display the value of 18 categories (lands, buildings and others) on the premises.
Following this, the then temple executive officer M Raghunath said they did not set up the boards due to a court stay as a temple in the state moved the court stating it did not come under the purview of the RTI Act.
“However, since there was no stay in this regard concerning Durga temple, we would set up eight boards on the hill shrine disclosing the total worth of all our assets, including lands, gold and silver ornaments and cash,” he said at that time.
But, only one board has been set up till date.
That too does not display all the details of the assets and it has been recently put in a room at the temple, according to sources.
However, the temple authorities have set up the boards displaying the names and other details of the first appellate authority, public information officer (PIO) and assistant public information officer (APIO).
When contacted, PRO Achyutha Ramaiah claimed  that they set up four such boards displaying the assets of the temple.
