Mumbai
is the financial capital of India and is often considered to be a safe place
for women. However, recent times have seen an exponential rise in heinous
crimes against women as data suggested that rape cases in the maximum city had
doubled.
According
to data, rape cases increased in Mumbai in 2017 compared to 2013. This information
has been given to RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Shaikh by the Brihanmumbai Police
department.
Shaikh
had been seeking information about rape cases in Mumbai Police Commissioner
Jurisdiction between 2013 and 2018. Replying to this RTI application, Mumbai
Police revealed that rape cases have increased in Mumbai city as compared to
previous years. The reply to an RTI application by Mumbai Police revealed that
388 rape cases were registered in the year 2013 and 751 rape cases were
registered in the year 2018.
