As per the
Right to Information (RTI) application’s reply received by an RTI activist,
from 2009 to date, there has been a decrease in the number of rabies deaths in
the city.
The RTI reply
was given by the civic-run Public Health Department. The RTI states that while
in 2009, the number of rabies deaths in city was 5 and 6 deaths in 2010, in
2017 there is only one death reported by the civic authority. In 2018 to date
there have been no deaths due to rabies in the city.
The reply
also shows that a major number of deaths due to rabies are resident from
outside the city. In 2009 while there were 18 deaths only five cases were
residents of Mumbai other 13 who died were from outside city. Similarly, in
2010 while there were 14 deaths only six were from Mumbai, other eight cases
were from outside city.
The number of
cases has been decreasing since 2009. In 2017 total number of rabies deathwere
four out of which one case was from Mumbai, other three cases were residing
outside Mumbai. In 2018 until May, there hasn’t been any rabies death
registered by the civic-run public health department.
